Canyon Spirit: the American Southwest by rail
Canyon Spirit is Rocky Mountaineer's US route. It has run since 2021 as Rockies to the Red Rocks and takes the new Canyon Spirit name in 2026, so it is a proven journey with a fresh identity, not an untested debut. It is the same daylight, glass-dome experience I love about the Rockies, but through Colorado and Utah's red rock country, and with no passport required.
The routes
Canyon Spirit runs by daylight only, so you do not sleep through the scenery, in a glass-dome coach with a meal and the view together. There are two ways to travel it:
- Two days, Denver to Moab: through the Colorado Rockies, along the Colorado River, and into Ruby Canyon, a stretch you can only reach by rail, before arriving in the red rock country around Moab.
- Three days, Denver to Salt Lake City: new for 2026, the same canyon run, then on across Utah's high desert to Salt Lake City, with overnight hotel stays along the way.
The season runs spring through fall, with weekly departures, so the good dates go early.
What a trip looks like
The train is the centerpiece, and it pairs naturally with the national parks near Moab, Arches and Canyonlands. I build in guided touring where it adds something, independent time to explore, comfortable hotels in good spots, and all the transfers so the days connect. Add a few nights in Denver or Salt Lake City on either end and you have a complete trip.
Who it suits
Travelers who loved Rocky Mountaineer in Canada and want a US trip next, red rock and canyon lovers, and anyone who wants the Southwest's scenery without doing the driving.
Why book Canyon Spirit with me
The route is well proven, running since 2021, but departures are only about once a week, and the new Salt Lake City itinerary for 2026 will draw interest, so the best dates go early. As a San Antonio travel advisor, I match the route, timing, and park add-ons to what you want, and handle everything around the train.
