Europe by river, train, and cruise

There is no single right way to see Europe, and that is the fun of it. I plan Europe as a river cruise down the Rhine or the Douro, as a train trip that links three countries in two weeks, as an ocean cruise through the Mediterranean, or as some combination of all three with a few city nights on either end. Whatever shape your trip takes, I book the pieces so they connect and hand you something that flows from the first morning to the last.

River cruising, well beyond the Rhine

The Rhine and the Danube are where most people start, and they are wonderful, but Europe's rivers run much further than that. The Douro carries you through the terraced vineyards of northern Portugal. The Seine follows Normandy out of Paris. The Rhône rolls through Provence and its wine country. The Moselle, the Main, and the Elbe each have their own quieter charm. And from late November the rivers fill with Christmas markets, one of my favorite ways to travel. Whichever river fits what you want to see, I match it to the season and the ship. My full river cruising page goes deeper on how it all works.

Multi-country trips by train

This is where Railbookers and I do some of my favorite planning. Rather than one country, we string several together by train. England to France to Italy in a single trip. A loop through the Alps on the great Swiss lines, where the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland connects the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express with time in Lucerne and Zermatt. London to Paris to the Italian lakes is another I love to build. You travel city center to city center, no airports in between, watching the countryside change through your window. I handle the trains, the seats, the hotels, and the timing so the connections line up and you are never puzzling over a foreign timetable. The train travel page has more on how I plan these.

European and Mediterranean cruises

If you would rather keep one ship as your hotel for the whole trip, Europe cruises beautifully. The Mediterranean gives you Barcelona, the Italian ports, the Greek islands, and the Adriatic in one loop. The British Isles and Northern Europe reach the fjords of Norway, the Baltic capitals, and the ports around the UK and Ireland. I book these with lines I trust, Viking and Princess among them, and I add the nights before and after that turn a cruise into a proper trip. The ocean cruising page covers how I approach the ships themselves.

A few city nights on either end

The cruise or the train is the spine of the trip, but the cities are where you catch your breath. A couple of nights in Paris before the river, a few days in Rome after the train, a London stopover on the way home. I choose hotels for location and comfort, arrange the transfers, and leave you open days to wander. It is the difference between seeing Europe from a schedule and actually spending time in it.

Who it suits

Travelers who want more of Europe than a single country. Couples marking a milestone with a river cruise and a few cities. Multigenerational families traveling together who want the trip handled from end to end. First-time Europe travelers who would rather trust someone than assemble it all themselves. My clients invest in good trips with real value, and Europe rewards that kind of planning.

Why plan your Europe trip with me

Europe is easy to overpack and easy to get wrong when the connections do not line up. I plan the routing so the days flow, book the rivers, trains, cruises, and hotels directly with partners I trust, and keep the value real, good trips that are worth it rather than the cheapest thing I can find or five-star for its own sake. If you are near San Antonio, I would rather sit down with you in person and hand you a printed, bound itinerary than email a PDF you have to squint at from the train.

I have done this myself. On a trip to Amsterdam, my daughter and I hopped a high-speed train to Paris for the day, close to 200 miles an hour, wandered the city, and were back in Amsterdam by evening. That is the kind of thing most people do not realize is possible until someone plans it for them.

Common questions

Can you combine a river cruise or train trip with time in the cities?

Yes, and I recommend it. A couple of nights before and after turns a one-week cruise or train journey into a fuller trip and keeps the cities from feeling rushed. I build the city stays, the transfers, and the timing right into the plan.

Do you only book the Rhine and Danube?

Not at all. Those are the most popular, but I also book the Douro in Portugal, the Seine in France, the Rhône in Provence, and the Christmas market sailings. I match the river to what you most want to see and the time of year you are traveling.

How does a multi-country train trip work?

You travel city center to city center by train, with no airports in between. I plan the route, book the seats and the hotels, and arrange the transfers so every connection lines up. Railbookers is one of my go-to partners for these.

How long should a Europe trip be?

For a single river cruise or ocean cruise, plan on about ten days with city nights on either end. For a multi-country train trip, two weeks lets you enjoy each stop instead of rushing through. I will right-size it to your time and your pace.
