Rocky Mountaineer is retiring the Rainforest to Gold Rush route after the 2026 season, and there are no plans to run it in 2027 or 2028. The final season is already sold out, so if this was the Canadian Rockies trip you had in mind, the question now is what you take in its place.
I’m Donnetta, a travel advisor in San Antonio, and I sell a lot of Rocky Mountaineer. Rainforest to Gold Rush was always the route I recommended to people who wanted something other than the standard Canadian Rockies photograph. Losing it is a real loss, so here is what is happening, whether you can still ride it, and what I would put in its place.
What the Rainforest to Gold Rush route is
It is three days on the train between North Vancouver and Jasper, with overnight hotel stays in Whistler and Quesnel. Like every Rocky Mountaineer route, it runs in daylight only, so you sleep in a bed and never roll past the good scenery in the dark.
What made it different was the country it covered. The other two Canadian routes both run inland through the Kamloops corridor. This one went up the coast past Howe Sound to Whistler, then north through Lillooet, Williams Lake, and Quesnel into gold rush country, and on through Prince George before turning east to Jasper. Canyons, ranchland, and old mining towns instead of the postcard peaks. It has run since 2006 and carried more than 250,000 travelers.
Why it is ending
This is not a demand problem, which is worth saying because that is what most people assume.
Rocky Mountaineer does not own the track. Canadian National is moving to abandon the section of the former BC Rail line between Squamish and 100 Mile House, specifically the Squamish and Lillooet subdivisions. Without a long-term operator maintaining that stretch of rail, there is no way to run a passenger train over it, so the route comes off the map.
Tristan Armstrong, CEO of the Armstrong Collective, which operates Rocky Mountaineer, put it plainly when the news broke: the route “has been a majestic part of our company’s history, and we would be happy to return to the route if a long-term operator can be found to maintain the rail line.” Whistler and Quesnel, which have hosted the overnight stops since 2006, lose the visitors along with it.
Can you still ride it in 2026
No. The final season sold out, so there is nothing left to book even if you cleared your calendar tomorrow. I would rather tell you that plainly than let you spend two weeks hoping something opens up.
Which means this is not a decision about catching a last departure. It is a decision about which of the remaining routes gives you what drew you to this one.
What I would book instead
Rocky Mountaineer still runs two routes in western Canada, and both are excellent trips.
Journey through the Clouds
Vancouver to Jasper by way of Kamloops, two days on the train with an overnight in Kamloops. If Jasper was the appeal of Rainforest to Gold Rush, this is the direct replacement. You still finish in Jasper National Park, you still ride under the glass domes, and you see Mount Robson and the Thompson and Fraser canyons on the way.
First Passage to the West
Vancouver to Banff or Lake Louise, also two days with the Kamloops overnight. This is the route most of my clients picture when they say Canadian Rockies. It follows the original transcontinental line through the Spiral Tunnels and Rogers Pass and ends you in the Banff and Lake Louise scenery.
The Circle Journey
If part of what you liked about Rainforest to Gold Rush was the length and the sense of covering real ground, this is the closest feeling. It combines both remaining routes so you go out one way and come back the other, which gets you Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper on the same trip. It costs more and takes longer. For the right traveler it is the better trip.
Canyon Spirit, if you want to stay stateside
Canyon Spirit is the same daylight, dome-car idea in Colorado and Utah, Denver to Moab or Denver to Salt Lake City, run by the same group. No passport, no border, red rock instead of glaciers. Several of my clients who had Rainforest to Gold Rush on their list have moved to this one instead and been happy about it.
Could the route come back
Rocky Mountaineer left the door open, and I hope somebody walks through it. But that depends on a rail operator stepping in to maintain a line that CN is walking away from, and that is not a quick or likely thing. I would not build a 2028 trip around the hope. If it returns, I will be the first to tell you.
Questions I get about this
Is Rainforest to Gold Rush cancelled? It runs through the 2026 season and then stops. It is not on the 2027 or 2028 calendars.
Why is Rocky Mountaineer ending it? Canadian National is abandoning the track between Squamish and 100 Mile House. Rocky Mountaineer leases the line rather than owning it, so when the track goes, the route goes.
Which Rocky Mountaineer route still goes to Jasper? Journey through the Clouds, from Vancouver through Kamloops. Two days on the train instead of three.
Can I book it for 2027? No. If someone is selling you a 2027 Rainforest to Gold Rush departure, something is wrong with the listing.
Is there any way onto a 2026 departure? No. The last season is fully booked. If you want the Canadian Rockies by train, the move is to book Journey through the Clouds or First Passage to the West for a future season, early enough to get the dates and service level you actually want. Tell me what appealed to you about Rainforest to Gold Rush and I will point you at the version of it that still exists. I have ridden this train and I can tell you which route actually matches what you had in mind, which service level is worth the money, and how the hotels and transfers on either end should connect.
